Jason Lai

Biography

Jason Lai is the highly trained classical music instrumentalist and conductor who has become an on-screen TV personality. With an aim to broaden the appeal of the music he loves, Jason is building a reputation as the next hopeful who can bring classical music to the masses, whilst modernising it in the process.
Once appointed to Assistant Conductor for the Philharmonic Orchestra, Jason was lucky enough to make his Proms debut, back in 2003. After this, Jason was made Artist Associate to the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and subsequently became their Associate Conductor by 2009. Since 2013, Jason Lai has been Associate Conductor for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and has also been a big player in Singapore’s classical music scene, since 2010.
Jason has frequently appeared on British TV as a critic for the Young Musician Of The Year competition. In addition to this, Jason’s celebrity student Sue Perkins won the Maestro competition with a nail-biting finale alongside a live audience and orchestra. Other TV appearances include The Culture Show and How A Choir Works.
More recently, Jason has been involved in filming for a series called Heart Of Asia, which explores the contemporary arts and culture scene in Indonesia, Korea, Thailand and the Philippines. Earlier this year, he was also appointed to become conductor of Singapore’s first professional chamber orchestra.
