Initially an amateur with Notts County, Ray Clemence joined Scunthorpe United in August 1965, then in June 1967, Liverpool swooped to bring Clemence to Anfield. With his first experience of life at football’s top table, he would soon become accustomed to success as the club that Shankly built came to dominate at home and in Europe. Increasingly recognised as a top-line performer, it was not long before appearances for England’s Under-23 team were followed by back-to-back games for the senior side. In the history of English Football only 10 men have made more League appearances than Ray Clemence, testimony indeed to the player’s standing as one of the game’s all-time goalkeeping greats. His son Steven is now with Birmingham City and Ray Clemence is a popular after dinner speaker who really brings a rare insight and honestly to his appearances.
